restaurant in Russia

In the centre of St. Petersburg, next to the Hermitage and the Admiralty, the Senate lies on the Neva, situated in a Louis XV palace. In the cellars of the Senate building we designed and executed, just after the fall of communism, the largest catering facility in St. Petersburg.

A venue with 2 bars, 3 restaurants, 3 kitchens, vestibule and toilets, meeting rooms and staff accommodation. Clinton, during his visit to Poetin, was dined in the Senate Bar. The Senate Bar is also listed in the World’s Best Bars ranking.

Czarist atmosphere

In order to contribute to the renewed spirit of Russian pride after the fall of communism, we adopted a ‘Czarist’ theme for the interior. To keep this as authentic as possible many Russian artisans were hired, who were skilled in marble mosaic, statues and fine art.

The decorated ceiling in the central area is a complete town map of St Petersburg, with its central point being the Senate Bar. All the Czars, and including the four commissioners, are shown as statues, creating a museum atmosphere.

In order to fit modern facilities and lighting into the underground spaces, we designed wood paneling, behind which the installations are housed. The ceilings are up-lighted, enhancing the dramatic effect of the cross vaulting.
