invisible extension overlooking nature

Project

We designed an extension to the official residence, for conference rooms and guest areas, for the Nigerian Embassy in The Hague.

To preserve the detached character of the villa, and the beautiful views of the pond and gardens, we came up with the imitative to the extended at level -1. By positioning the extension and enclosing it by earthworks, the ground appears to roll smoothly, as if the extension is built underground. The extension is built above ground with a closed soil balance and the view from the villa remains uninterrupted.

By keeping the extension to the -1 level, it connects perfectly onto the villa. The extension has daylight on several sides and opens a high and broad vista over the pond and gardens. This provides a strong outside-inside experience and extends the visual spatial limits.

The roof and two walls are provided with earth and vegetation, thus creating a high insulation factor. In addition, this creates double land use; on the one hand for the conference and guest rooms and at the same time, the ’roof’ may be used as a terrace to unwind.

Whether the pond could be used for heating and cooling the building surface areas is being investigated. Through the optimal use of daylight relatively little additional lighting is required. This action, together with energy-efficient solar panels on the roof of the residence, realizes a sustainable energy generation source.
