Innovative conversion dike house

change characteristic property

An old dike house, with its existing extension, had been substantially rebuilt to poor standard. The dike house has now been fully restored to its former glory. This is one of the last authentic dike houses Dijkhuizen by Lakes of Rotte, the Rottemeren. Due to space limitations and desired living comfort a charming extension was constructed at the back of the dike house. Because the rear of the property receives the northern light, a spacious glass walkway was invented, so that light is received central in the extension on two stories. The extension has a combined living and kitchen area with a height of about four meters, and above there are the extra bedrooms.

The new building has a "smart floor". This prefab floor has a hollow space in which all equipment can be fitted easily. It allows for the flexibility of reconfiguration in the future.

The ground floor flows out into a terrace. This links the inside with the outside. The façade is from western red cedar, a wood that requires no maintenance.

The patio doors on the first floor are about half a metre inset, maintenance and cleaning can take place easily.

This extension retains the atmosphere of the old dike house and maintains a high level of modern comfort throughout the entire house. The dike house has its atmosphere of romance and nostalgia while the extension has an atmosphere of openness and lightness. This combination creates a special experience, because the old outside façade, illuminated by the incoming light, links both spaces and connects the back rooms, as it does with the ground floor to the first floor.
